Gujral Science City - Introduction
Pushpa
Gujral Science City offers a blend of education, curiosity and fun
to ensure longer and repeated visits. The project is aimed at cultivating
an interest in science through open-ended exploration away from
text books and black boards, with a scientific apporach to problem
solving. The project has something for evryone, regarless of age,
education, profession or socail strata and is intended to make science
accessible to people who are not part of the formal education system.
The total cost of the science city Project is Rs. 100 crores. It
is a joint project of the Government of India and Government of
Punjab. Government of India will contribute Rs.70 crore for capital
expenses (Buildings and Exhibits) where as Punjab Government will
provide Rs.30 crores in term of land and other infra structural
facilities.
The
foundation stone of the Science City was laid down by former Prime
Minister Sh. I. K. Gujral on October 17, 1997. PGSC, in its second
phase will have several galleries namely Cosmos, How Things Work,
Life Through the Ages, Amazing Living Machine, Science of Cricket
and Living earth to present memorable, knowledge-based and excitable
experience. In addition to these galleries, a state level Energy
Education and awareness park is also being developed. The first
phase of Science City was inaugurated by the His Excellency Lt.
Gen (retd) S.F Rodrigues, Governor of Punjab on March 19, 2005.

Voyage Hall building
Science
Voyage Hall Building which houses the major attraction of the Phase-I
Shows & Galleries, had been built with an aerial view of a spaceship.
The building consist of Giant Dome Theature. The outer surface of
this Dome theature gives an appearance of giant world globe. The
globe like layout had been created using highly sophisticated computerized
mechanism. The actual map on the dome had been formed using more
than two and half million glass mosaic tiles each of size 20mm X
20 mm which is very unique in itself. Another unique feature about
the building is that it has covered area of 6900 square meters without
pillars in the centre. The roof had bee constructed in unique artistic
space framework.
1.Giant Dome Theature
In
the theature, Large Format films are projected on 23 meter-titled
dome. The theature has a capacity of 325 persons. Large Format Film
Projection system uses 15 perforations, 70 mm film to shoot and
project ../images with incredible sharpness. The 15/70 frame is
10 times larger than 35mm used in regular theatures and 3 times
larger than standard 70mm film used in classic Hollywood epics.
Semi circular giant dome screens produce huge ../images that soar
and swoop above, beside and behind you to fully surround you presenting
the spectacular immersible experience. Uncompressed didgital, wrap
around sound is simply unsurpassed in depth and clarity from a small
drop of rain to a massive clap of thunder. The Large Format Films
shown in the theature are designed to educate and enlighten as much
as they are to entertain.
